Reason Why 曾在多部影集中出現過，多半是當作分手情歌，不過其實這首歌背後，並不只是一段普通的愛情而已。這首歌除了關乎 Rachael Yamagata 與前男友 James 的戀情，以及他們的樂團 Bumpus 。 Rachael Yamagata 是歌手兼音樂創作人，她也為自己的樂團寫歌，但她想嘗試的新曲風卻不被團員所看好，甚至還遭到嘲諷。因此， Rachael Yamagata 退團單飛，同時也與同在樂團裡的男友分手。

單飛後，前男友取代她的位子，成了樂團唯一的主唱，也重新演繹了不少她從前寫的歌。 Rachael Yamagata 即便是離開了他，卻又因自己的音樂而無法真正離開他，收音機、雜誌上，處處都是他的消息。

“The reason why I’m gone, and you’re still there” 這句歌詞我想有兩種解釋方法：一是我離開了你，向前單飛，繼續追夢，你卻仍停留在原地，唱著我寫的舊歌。二是雖然我已經離你而去，你卻仍不時出現在我的腦海中，成了揮之不去的記憶。
