The Lumineers

在讀這篇歌曲分析之前，希望大家先讀讀故事的前半部，也就是 The Lumineers 的 Sleep on the Floor 還有 Angela 這兩首歌。 Sleep on the Floor 、Angela、Cleopatra 三首歌曲，訴說著同一個女人青春、中年、年老的三個階段，當然，影片中旅館 The Three Ladies 指的就是這三個女人。MV 很巧妙地把三段故事連接在一起。

在 Angela 的結尾，女主角離開了小鎮與家、離開了旅館並搭上了 Cleopatra 的計程車。 Cleopatra 是年老時的她。從歌詞中，我們可以知道 Cleopatra 離了婚，孩子也大了，她獨自過著開計程車的生活。並且也在歌詞的第一段說明了年輕時她拒絕與男友一同離開的原因。那時，她因為父親的去世而悲痛，無法下定決心答應男友的求婚、無法與男友一起拋下她的小鎮生活。而在男友獨自離開後，她便一直惦記著他，她的心從此就冰封了，即使後來她找了個人嫁，那也絕不是真愛，她再也開心不起來。

歌名用 Cleopatra 埃及豔后這個名字，或許是因為埃及豔后與女主角一樣，都有著一段不幸的愛情。”I was young and an actress”，說她是演員，指的是在人生中她必須戴著各種面具，好應付不同的場合。就像她扮演了一個好女兒的角色，在父親過世時，沒有衝動與愛人私奔，而是留在家裡守著家人與家園。而她也扮演好了母親的角色，雖然在 Angela 中，她拋下了她的婚姻，但在 Cleopatra 影片中可知，她與兒子和前夫還保持著正常的聯繫。這一生，她戴著面具，辛苦地扮演別人，不從真正做過自己，因為少了她真正愛的人，她就像失了魂一樣，她不知道還能追尋什麼。在影片 3 分 17 秒的地方，女主角再次分身。一部分的她跟隨丈夫（前夫？）進屋，另一部分的她則獨自離開。她究竟選擇了什麼樣的生活。我們無法知道，但可以肯定的是，自從她錯過她的真愛以後，她就一直惦記著他。

因此，她把希望寄託在今生之後的死亡。”But I was late for this, late for that, late for the love of my life”，在這一輩子，她晚了一步，錯過了與愛人同在的機會，但是”when I die alone, when I die alone, when I die I’ll be on time”，當她老了、死了，她與她的愛人便會在同一個天堂相遇。或許她相信死後的世界是靜止的，不論是她或者她的愛人先死去，他們都會在那兒等著對方，享受著他們活著時錯過的幸福。
